In this 4 week class we will look at some of the important Historical events that have happened in Maryland's history by telling the stories of what happened. We will look at the founding of Maryland and its first British settlers. Next we will look at the Battle of Baltimore and the writing of the Star Spangled Banner. From there we will turn to the American Civil War and talk about the bloodiest day of the war at the Battle of Antietam. Finally we will talk about the Great Baltimore Fire and how it changed the standards for firefighters in the US. For each class each student will be asked to bring one fact about a famous Marylander to present to the class. (Presentations should not last longer than one minute) Next we will go on to talk about the story of the class's historical event, and if time allows at the end of class there will be a short, fun, Maryland trivia challenge to see how much the students remember. Parental Guidance
In this class we will talk about two major battles and one of the most destructive fires in US history. While I try to present the information and the stories in an age appropriate manner, these were destructive events. The beginning of Maryland history was also full of tension and conflict between various religious groups, I try to present these events and groups in a neutral and factual manner.
