We will read and discuss folktales, holiday stories, and Bible stories. No prior knowledge of Judaism is required for this class, and students of all religions or no religion are welcome! At the beginning of every class I will go over new vocabulary words and any background information needed in order to understand the story. Many Jewish folktales are about Elijah the Prophet, who first appears in the Bible. In later folklore he travels the world, often in disguise, in order to help people, or to teach them a lesson. We will also read stories of Hershel of Ostropol, a witty man who liked to make people who were stuck up look like fools. As we go through the year, we will read stories of Jewish holidays as they are approaching, including Rosh Hashanah, Sukkot, Hanukkah, Purim, Passover and Shavuot. And we will also learn about some of the great stories from the Bible. We will study these stories from a cultural and secular perspective. This class will start in September, and continue through the school year, ending in May. It is an ongoing class, so you can unsubscribe at any time. Please keep in mind, though, that if your child withdraws from the class temporarily, that space becomes available on Outschool, and if the class fills up then your child can not rejoin unless/until someone else drops the class.
