Class Experience

No experience needed! Bring your stories to life! Every student leaves the class with new skills, new friends and hours of fun ahead as a movie maker! This camp is an extended version of my single-session beginner and intermediate courses with the additional benefit of tons of feedback given the multi-class format and the use of the Outschool classroom to interact with classmates getting and giving feedback.

Students may use bricks, stuffed animals, or any materials they may have at home. However, many parts of the lesson will demonstrate brick techniques. Also note that the PRO VERSION of Stop Motion Studio is required to perform several of the skills taught in class, it is $4.99 and the details/link included below. This class is taught using the app on iOS/iPad/iPhone. The Android version is less robust as the iOS version, but it WILL work for the class. The computer version however, is much more complicated and therefore CANNOT be used for this class. There are a few small accessories students will need like blu-tack and a stand/tripod. I provide detailed resources on what to purchase and/or how to build your own stand/tripod so extra costs are minimal if you don't already have the supplies.

Every student learns ALL of the following KEY skills over the course of the week:

1. Getting started with the Stop Motion Studio Pro app. Understanding the interface.
2. Key principles of successful shooting/basics of animating your objects.
3. Understanding camera modes, what can be left alone, what is good to start with first.
4. How to use the Image editor. Understanding layers, the editing menus and controls.
5. Inserting and editing titles and credits, speech bubbles and objects.
6. How to use the Audio editor and filters for voice overs, theme music and sound effects.
7. Timeline editing: adjusting speed, delete, copy, paste, rearrange frames, adding text, adding images.
8. Exporting and uploading your movies to share with the class.
9. How to give constructive feedback to fellow moviemakers.
10. Searching for and saving images for shooting using Green Screen. Making adjustments to perfect the effect.
11. How to throw and make things fly by learning to mask and erase guidelines.
12. Using the paint tools to add effects: give your characters tools, powers, expressions.

Learning Goals

Learn and practice the skills that go into animation—storytelling, directing, editing, sounds, music, set design, character movement and more. Learn from fellow animators by learning to get and give constructive feedback through the Outschool platform.

Supply List
REQUIRED RESOURCES:

1. This course requires 2 Devices: One device for watching the Zoom/Classroom (computer is best) AND a iOS or Android device with the app installed.
2. The Stop Motion Studio PRO app is REQUIRED if you want to do everything you see me do in the class. It's best to get the PRO app as it is much cheaper than buying in-app purchases via the free app.
3. STAND/TRIPOD: A phone stand/tripod is a necessity to do stop motion. I have created a slide with many easy, free stands you can make using household items like brick figures, coffee cups, cardboard, etc.. Have a look and click on the images to go to the how-to video. You only need one, you just need something basic to get started. Link to do it yourself stands: https://tinyurl.com/y43swn7n

4. GREENSCREEN: Please have at least one letter sized /A4/A3 sized sheet of green or blue construction paper, green/blue fabric, brick background or a commercially available "greenscreen" of some kind to practice making use of the 'greenscreen tool". It is enough to see how it works with a small green paper background and then be able to construct or purchase the appropriate tool for your projects. There is no common size, etc.. to recommend as it depends on the size of the stop motion stage/action.

5. BLU-TACK: One package of Blu tack adhesive putty or equivalent. Available at most office supply shops or stores that sell school supplies. Also available through Amazon: https://tinyurl.com/y663qao5

OPTIONAL RESOURCE: One small spool of utility wire thin enough to easily bend but still hold its shape to hold a brick figure: Available at any hardware store or Amazon: https://tinyurl.com/y446jo47 (this is just an example, does NOT have to be this particular wire! anything relatively shapeable yet somewhat stiff will do!)

NOTE TO THOSE CHOOSING TO USE ANDROID VERSION of STOP MOTION STUDIO PRO:

For reasons far beyond my control/understanding, the Android version of the app is notably missing a key PRO feature:
You cannot change your voice speed and there are no audio filters as in the iOS version. It is NOT a dealbreaker, but your learner should know this up front. If you have a choice to use an iOS device and your student is not comfortable with navigating the operating system of Android, I would encourage the use of the iOS device as it has more features and is generally easier to use for students.

I will demonstrate the workflow for both Android and iOS in class, so NO WORRIES, I just want to make this difference clear up front if there is a choice of which device to use for animation.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hi! I'm Mr. Brady! My priority is always that every learner learn and have fun, and my classes are setup to remove the obstacles that prevent them from applying technology effectively to teach themselves and create independently; I help kids take action as thinkers, creators and innovators in their own right ON TOP of the mechanics of stop motion animation.

It makes a big difference for your child that I have over 15 years of classroom/IT lab experience teaching K-12 students and leading digital learning and STEAM programs in the US and top international schools. I hold a New York State Teaching Certification in Middle School Grades 5-9, and my Masters Degree is in Teaching Students with Disabilities. I welcome and can help ALL learners.
