If one wants to be a writer or an editor, or even if they just want to write papers that don't make their English teachers burst into tears, they need to master grammar. Grammar is not an easy subject (yes, I'm a professional, but I still need to look things up once in a while) and it's often made more difficult because practicing it is so boring. This class is taught in English.
Students will be able to demonstrate the proper use of punctuation. Students will be able to demonstrate the proper use of commas, colons and semi-colons Students will be able to identify, define and use participial phrases. Students will be able to describe and create a proper paragraph and recognize the structure of an essay. Students will be able to identify and demonstrate active and passive voice. Students will be able to discern and properly use common homophones in a sentence Students will be able to identify and demonstrate appropriate verb tenses in a sentence. Students will be able to recognize errors, edit, and correct simple sentences.
Students will need materials for note-taking and writing down examples. Any other materials will be uploaded to the classroom by the instructor.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
This class is loosely based on Strunk and White's "The Elements of Style" and other similar books. Any other resources, references, or source material will be uploaded to the classroom board.
