Class Experience

If one wants to be a writer or an editor, or even if they just want to write papers that don't make their English teachers burst into tears, they need to master grammar. Grammar is not an easy subject (yes, I'm a professional, but I still need to look things up once in a while) and it's often made more difficult because practicing it is so boring.

A lot of kids find studying language arts to be boring as heck. Not in this class! In this class,

students will use (and create) real-life examples to practice the skills of grammar, punctuation, and style. Together we will improve our writing and editing skills using classic rules in an up to date context.

Over the next eight weeks, we will cover the following topics:

Week One: Commas and apostrophes. What, exactly, is an Oxford comma? Which answer is it, is it its or it's? It's its, if it's possessive.
Week Two: Colons, semi-colons, and dashes --- when do we use them?
Week Three: Pronouns and participial phrases. Speaking of pronouns, do you use he/him, she/her, or they/them?
Week Four: Paragraphs. A quick review of the paragraph, the key to the essays you will have throughout high school and college.
Week Five: Active vs. Passive Voice: Do you have the voice, or does the voice have you?
Week Six: Word Choice: There/their/they're, to/two/too, whether the weather, which witch is which?
Week Seven: Tenses. When you're going to go where you are going, but you've already gone where you went.
Week Eight: Punctuation, Editing, and Review. Is there such a thing as too much punctuation???????? There is!!!!!!!!!!!!

Here we shred the worksheets and toss out the dull repetition in favor of imagination. Using a variety of sources, such as music, drama and literature, games, and interpersonal creativity, we will explore how grammar and punctuation help us communicate with one another.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I am a polymath, a person who has many interests and loves all kinds of learning, over many subjects. I am also an auto-didact: I love to learn on my own. so very likely, I'm a lot like you.
I have taught many subjects, but some of my favorites are art, literature, creative writing, creative math, world cultures, and multicultural history. I am also available for tutoring in Literacy/English grades 2-12 and Math grades K-5. (Message me for other subjects of interest.)

My background is in education (M.A.T, Elementary Education, University of Puget Sound, 1993), and I have been a teacher for over 25 years. I have taught in many schools, across three states, all ages (K-adult), and in many venues. I am currently in the process of renewing my Washington State Teaching Certificate, with endorsements in Elementary Education (K-8), Special Education (K-12), and Drama (4-12).

My desire is to foster curiosity, confidence, creativity, communication and the love of learning in all students. We learn from every experience and every interaction. I learn as much from young people as they learn from me.

As for me, I am an artist, a poet, an animal lover, a world traveler, a reader, and I love all kinds of music. I mean ALL kinds. I also love wigs! I have 40 of them and like to wear them just for fun.
I can't wait to meet you and learn together.
