This class will serve as an introduction to Stoic philosophy and its four major contributors. Students do not need any prior experience or engagement with the concept of Stoicism. Learners will interact continually with short pieces of Stoic writings, the instructor and classmates through analysis, discussion, and debate on the tenets of Stoicism presented in class and through short readings. Scholars will learn and demonstrate: -a general understanding of the four major Stoic philosophers -an ability to think critically when presented with different viewpoints -how to increase self-control, resilience, and courage based on Stoic tenets -methods and mindsets which promote positive self-image and adaptability -the importance of resilience and routine in daily living
I have taught English Language Arts, Literature, and ESL at the middle and high school levels for nearly 13 years. Prior to my full-time work with students online I served as an instructional coach, reading interventionist, Friday School principal, and Secondary English Specialist for a large school district. I hold an active teaching license as well as a K-12 principal license. My focus areas of expertise are English Language Arts (reading, writing, speaking), Literature Studies, Common Core standards, ESL, Social and Emotional Learning, Philosophy, Stoicism, Project-Based Learning and Evidence-based Instructional Practices.
Students will be asked to complete two short projects which synthesize Stoic teachings with their lived experience. Students may also be asked to read short passages (provided by instructor) prior to class. Readings will not exceed three pages.

Learners will be assessed during weeks 4 and 8 by completing short projects which integrate Stoic Philosophy into their lives
45 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
YouTube clips will be used occasionally to aid in learners' understanding of a concept and when introducing a new philosopher. Students do not need an account or access to YouTube. Video will be presented by the instructor via screenshare and will generally be less than 5 minutes in length.
Students will be occasionally shown short (< 5 minutes) videos to introduce a philosopher and/or introduce a concept with visual support.
