Stoic Philosophy: An Introduction to the Major Thinkers, Writers, and Principles
Class experience
This class will serve as an introduction to Stoic philosophy and its four major contributors. Students do not need any prior experience or engagement with the concept of Stoicism. Learners will interact continually with short pieces of Stoic writings, the instructor and classmates through analysis, discussion, and debate on the tenets of Stoicism presented in class and through short readings. Scholars will learn and demonstrate: -a general understanding of the four major Stoic philosophers -an ability to think critically when presented with different viewpoints -how to increase self-control, resilience, and courage based on Stoic tenets -methods and mindsets which promote positive self-image and adaptability -the importance of resilience and routine in daily living -the importance of objectivity and understanding one's sphere of influence and control
I have taught English Language Arts and ESL at the middle and high school levels for nearly 15 years. I hold a BA in English Language and Literature and an MA in ESL with a focus on theoretical and applied linguistics. Prior to my full-time work with students online I have served as an instructional coach, reading interventionist, building administrator and Secondary English Specialist for a large school district. I hold an active teaching license as well as a principal's license. My areas of expertise are English Language Arts (reading, writing, speaking), American and Historical Literature, Social and Emotional Learning, Philosophy, Essay and Fiction Writing and Self-Improvement.
