How current events and company news affect stock prices
As a former Investment Banker and certified Business Education Teacher, I love teaching Stock Marketing Investing! My experience in the industry gives me a deep knowledge of stock analysis and the process of buying and selling stocks. My students always enjoy playing the Stock Market Simulation and competing with me along with their classmates. This stock market class is fun and engaging and knowing how to invest is an important life skill. Investing responsibly in the stock market is the best way to grow savings and build wealth for the long term. That's why it's critical for young adults to learn how invest responsibly now, BEFORE they risk real money.

Based on my extensive experience teaching this subject, I know how to make it interesting and memorable. I use video clips and engaging handouts to make the content easy to understand and remember. This class is interactive, not lecture based, so students will have the opportunity to discuss, share experiences, and ask questions. I will help students discover how current events effect stock prices so they are more interested the world around them.
Homework Offered
There will be one brief homework assignment completed before we begin the stock market simulation. Students will pick one publicly traded company and use the internet (a specific web site will be provided) to complete an stock information sheet. Once we begin trading stocks in the stock market simulation game, students can trade on their own, as much or as little as they like. For each trade they make, students should write down why they bought or sold the particular stock. We will discuss the stock market's performance and review the student's portfolios in class.
1 - 2 hours per week outside of class
Assessments Offered
There are no formal assessments in the class.
Grades Offered
No materials need to be purchased. Students will need internet access for playing the stock market simulation game (see the web sites above) and to research company information and stock market news. . I will provide a template for students to use when they are considering a stock for investment.
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
To research stocks, company and economic news, we use Yahoo Finance (finance.yahoo.com). It is a free, well known and respected site for news and financial information. The investment game we use is howthemarketworks.com, which is the industry standard for teachers. It is used throughout the US and Canada to provide a simulation platform where students can safely invest in the stock market with fake money. No financial risk at all but a great learning experience of investing in real companies. We use Wall Street Survivor, and educational site with easy to follow, engaging videos on several investing topics such as stock indexes, fractional investing, unrealized gains and losses.

All content used in this course is age appropriate and does not include any sensitive topics (political, sexual, violent, etc.).
