Description

Class Experience

Students will learn four basic principles of design, typography, and color theory.

Students will learn how to use the free design website Canva to create their original designs and put their new knowledge into practice.

Students will have the opportunity to work in a supportive environment with like-minded, creative individuals to learn new content together and grow as a team.

Students will learn how to give and accept both positive feedback and constructive criticism to reach new levels of achievement and success.
I have taught award-winning high school publications for 18 years, and in this time, these publications have routinely received state-level and even national-level recognition for their designs. I have also led regional and state-level workshop classes on design and provided critiques for various student publications. I am excited to connect with new students to share my knowledge and see the awesome places their creativity will take them on our journey!
Each week, I will encourage students to work at least 30 minutes to an hour practicing concepts and using the Canva program. To spark the imagination, a themed challenge will be issued each week. This will be a friendly challenge and a way for students to have a loose goal around which to center their work. By facing the same challenge as their peers, students will quickly learn how a single subject or assignment can spark a world of creative opportunity!

I will also be encouraging the class to participate in discussion in our course between classes and share their creative work and progress. I plan to "pop in" to the discussion frequently to give praise, feedback, or suggestions. This will be a supportive environment closely monitored by the teacher.
Prior to the first session, student will need access to a free account on Canva. If students miss a week of the course and additional instruction may be helpful, I may post a short YouTube video in the Outschool classroom with the related skill or a quick review of skills previously learned. This may be created by me or be a video I have found that covers the same skill and quality of information as we learned in class. I may also use a handout or other methods of delivery instead for this review, depending on what would be most appropriate for the topic at hand.
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
No letter grades will be given. Instead, assessment will be frequent and informal as students create their works each week. This will be verbal in class and written on the discussion board between class times. Students will receive feedback from both their supportive peers and from me.
1 hour per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
Students will need to create a Canva.com account (or use a parent's account if one is available) to participate in this course. All of our design instruction and course projects will take place within Canva. It is a free platform and very user friendly, perfect for beginners and and beyond!

YouTube will only be used as needed for student absences to make up missed content. I will only use this method if the video is found to be equal in value to instruction from class and cover the same content as the missed week of instruction. All content will be fully viewed and approved by me ahead of time to ensure it is appropriate, and this content will be optional as well.
