Step Up for Fitness: Beginner Exercise

Let's step up for fitness! In this class, we will use an aerobic step to encourage students to begin to workout. An aerobic step is one of the easiest ways to workout and it doesn't require much thought to do it! My focus of this class is to help fight childhood obesity. With this said, this class is open to all students. During each class, we will stretch and step. While stepping, we will talk. Talking topics may include asking students what they struggle with, how each of us overcome these struggles, and how each student in the class may struggle with similar topics. I want to show students that they aren't alone in how they feel and how working out can help fight stress, anxiety, and depression. Exercise is a great mood booster and I want students to learn these benefits. Personally, I have lost 90 pounds and grew up as an "overweight" child. I had an excess of fat on my body that may have one day led to many healthy problems. I want to inspire kids to own who they are, to be proud of who they are, to overcome struggles, and to live their own healthy lifestyle. CLASS TIME RECOMMENDATION: I highly recommend signing up for multiple times of this class throughout the week. The United States Department of Agriculture (choosemyplate.gov) recommends "children and adolescents should do 60 minutes or more of physical activity each day. Most of the 60 minutes should be either moderate or vigorous intensity aerobic physical activity, and should include vigorous-intensity physical activity at least 3 days a week." This class is a beginner exercise class where students will step on and step off of an aerobic step and should not be too difficult for children, however, it will last 40 minutes and I consider it to be moderate exercise. Please choose accordingly as to how often your child needs to take this class. If your child has health concerns, please consult your family doctor before engaging in any physical activity.
