Welcome to our soldering class for kids, where young minds embark on an exciting journey into the world of electronics and craftsmanship! In this self-paced, hands-on course, students will learn the fundamentals of soldering under the guidance of an experienced instructor. From mastering the art of creating strong and reliable electrical connections to understanding safety protocols, participants will gain invaluable skills that extend beyond the class experience. Throughout the course, students will have the opportunity to apply their newfound knowledge by completing two engaging projects. These projects are carefully designed to challenge their soldering abilities while fostering creativity and problem-solving skills. By the end of the three lessons included in this class, participants will not only have a deeper understanding of soldering techniques but also a sense of accomplishment from bringing their ideas to life through hands-on experimentation. Class participants will work independently and share their finished pieces in the classroom. Sacha is available for troubleshooting and support throughout the three lessons.
Learning Goals
Learners will gain a foundation in the fundamentals of soldering as well as the safety precautions that must be taken during this activity.
Participants will be provided with the time and materials to complete two hands-on, interactive activities to practice their soldering skills.
Syllabus
3 Lessons
over 3 WeeksLesson 1:
Fundamentals, safety, and practice.
In this session, we’ll explore the wide range of tools and ancillary items included in our soldering kits. We’ll also focus heavily on safety techniques to ensure learners are aware of the risks associated with utilizing a hot soldering iron and what steps they can take to remain safe.
Lastly, we’ll complete some practice soldering activities to get a feel for the skill.

Lesson 2:
Jitterbug
In this session, we’ll use our new soldering skills to bring a buzzing, skittering jitterbug to life. This insect-shaped kit is a fun to explore basic circuit theory.

Parental Guidance
This soldering course involves the use of high-temperature soldering irons and other potentially hazardous tools. While every precaution will be taken to ensure safety, there is a risk of burns or other injuries if safety guidelines are not followed. Parents or guardians are advised to discuss the risks and safety precautions with their child before enrolling in the course, and to ensure that appropriate supervision is provided during class sessions.
Supply List
Participants will need the following three items to successfully complete the class. Soldering Kit: https://a.co/d/gZIaZ0H Jitterbug: https://a.co/d/gwoxtjQ Blink: https://a.co/d/e3dpmiw The soldering kit comes with a link for a free eBook too! Fun! Note: I’ve chosen this soldering iron specifically because of the coil design on the stand. It adds an extra safety feature by covering most of the heated mechanism.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.

Sacha (he/him) is a born tinkerer and has been nicknamed MacGyver by his family. He can fix anything and if it has wheels (whether it be two or four), he’ll race it! He has worked in the automotive industry for over 20 years with brands such as Lexus, Honda, and Volvo. More than one service technician has been shocked when he rolls up his business button-down sleeves and ventures under a car to help troubleshoot issues alongside them. When he’s not working in the automotive world, he’s recreating in the automotive world. Sacha owns a Honda S2000 that he has fully modified to track standards for autocross racing. He’s raced in the national championship five times. Sacha also races hobby grade RC cars which are capable of top speeds in excess of 70MPH! ((You’d be amazed at how much soldering is involved in this hobby!!))
