Class Experience

US Grade 4 - 6
Beginner Level
In this class students will learn about simple circuit design and speed.

Students will spend 30-45 minutes building a small propeller car that is powered by a simple battery circuit. Once the car is built students will test their designs by testing how far their car travels. After testing their design, they will get to optimize their design to see if they can make their car go further than before.

Concepts that students will learn from this class are:
 1. How a simple DC circuit works
 2. How to build a simple DC circuit
 3. The engineering process of:
             a. Design
             b. Prototype (build)
             c. Test & Measure
             d. Improve
as they improve their initial designs

Learning Goals

1. How a simple DC circuit works
2. How to build a simple DC circuit. We will do this in a simple, easy to use online designer
and then translate that design to an actual circuit
3. The engineering process (Design, build, test & measure, improve)

Other Details

Parental Guidance
Parents should be prepared to help their student build their propeller car. Some students will choose to use a hot glue gun, super glue, or Elmer's glue to assemble their car. All gluing and assembly of the basic car structure (not including the wheels or the circuit) should be completed before the start of class. This way we can spend more time learning about circuits, designing our circuit, and the engineering process.
Supply List
- 2 AA batteries
- 2 pieces of cardboard
- 2 plastic straws
- glue (Elmer's glue, super glue, or hot glue gun)

The remaining materials needed for this project are in the detailed "Propeller Car List of Materials" file attached below
