Description
Class Experience
Students will learn to use planning guidelines and budgeting of materials. Students will learn to work collaboratively with a team. Students will learn how to construct a boat using the engineering design process. Students will develop and understanding of the relationship between weight, buoyancy, and displacement.
1 file available upon enrollmentNOTE: Students do not need to have every supply item on the list. They will choose from available materials to build their boats. Students will need the following items on hand to complete the project. Each item will be allotted a "limit" and thus the students will be able to use as little or as much of a resource they desire until they have met the design constraint. Please be sure they have enough of each resource to choose from. Supply List: • Straws • Regular Masking Tape (other types of tape, painters tape, scotch tape, duct tape, do not work well in this challenge) • Plastic Wrap • Waxed Paper • Aluminum Foil • Styrofoam Cups • Foam Sheets (4"x6" craft foam - this is very thin and flexible foam) • Weights (quarters, marbles, small washers, etc totaling at least 2 lbs) • Water container (like a dish pan, sink, or rubber tote) • Towels or Paper Towels • Lab Sheets (printable link will be available via the classroom upon signup)
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
1 hour 30 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
