STEM Detectives! (FLEX)

In this 5 weeks flex class, students will learn about forensic science through video, slides, and hands-on learning activities. In week 5, Learners will take on the role of junior detective and solve the case of the missing cookie jar.

Class Experience

This class is taught in English.
Students will develop an understanding of forensic science and STEM concepts throughout this flex class
Learners will be assigned homework/ learning activities each week on Monday and are expected to be completed and submitted via classroom thread or messaging by the Friday of that week. Homework and activities will be reviewed and feedback will be provided to help support the students learning. Homework/ Learning activities should take approximately 1 hour per week.
Week 1: PDF Activity Pencil Crayons, Markers, or Crayons Week 2: Baby Powder (flour or cornstarch work as well) Clear tape Black Paper or Cardstock Fluffy Brush (Makeup brushes work best) Week 3: Multiple Different Brand Pens (all the same colour) Coffee Filters Scissors Ruler Two clear cups or jars Rubbing Alcohol Water Tape Popsicle sticks Week 4: Styrofoam Plate Scissors Pen/Marker Something thick to bite into (Thick cheese slice, chocolate, etc) Week 5: Case File PDF
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
Learners will participate in a short quiz (via google forms) to gauge their understanding of science safety prior to completing the experiment. Homework/ Learning Activities for the weeks will be assigned on Monday and are expected to be submitted by the Friday of that week. Homework will be reviewed over the weekend and feedback provided to the learner the following Monday. Science journals will be submitted by week 5 Friday and reviewed by the teacher. Comments will be added to support the students learning and provide suggestions to build upon their learning
No live meetings, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
Students will be completing an experiment in which parental guidance or assistance may be needed. Some activities may require comparison, so it is highly encouraged that parents or even siblings assist their learner(s) with these activities
