Class experience
US Grade 3 - 6
This is a one-time class that will go over the basics of solar energy and heat energy. After around 10 minutes of building background knowledge in these two areas, students will will have 20 minutes to build their own solar oven while I am available for questions and suggestions. Then students will present their final product before leaving the class to go cook something in their solar oven! This class is a great, one-time STEM challenge that will combine science, technology, engineering,...
Students will learn about how to capture thermal energy from sunlight along with basic heat energy concepts, such as conductors and insulators, and the greenhouse effect.
Shoe box or similar sized box, around 2 ft of foil, 1 ft plastic wrap, and a stick/popsicle stick. Food: You may choose what to try and cook in your solar oven, but make sure to try something that can be eaten raw in case it does not cook all the way through. Some suggestions are s'mores or store-bought cookie dough. Optional: Any other craft supplies your learner may like to add! Black paper, stickers, paint, etc.
Students will be constructing a shoe box solar oven and may need parental support in order to cut cardboard or other material.
I am an elementary school teacher who believes in playing to learn. I try to make all of my classes interactive, engaging, and fun! Along with teaching I am a professional wedding and family photographer.
