Class Experience

Let's build a real artificial intelligence brain simulation on your own computer and explore!

Neurons and neural networks are the basis of Artificial intelligence, in this class we explore what a computer simulated neuron really is by building some! With a easy to use graphical software (free) you will be able to build neurons and connect them into a simple brain to perform tasks, in the process truly gaining an understanding how how the brain, and AI works.

Class progression through the 10 week course

Intros and basic discussion
Install the software
Build a simple brain used in a model of a mouse with smell ability
Explore the concept of neurons and synapses with weights
Train the model to do simple things
Build a more complex model with multiple inputs and items to be attracted to or repel.
Build a model brain and network that can be "trained" instead of hardwired
Explore the difference between instinct and learned behavior

At the end of the series, each student is encouraged to use their new knowledge to build a model of their own and demonstrate what it can do.

This 10 week course requires installation of free java software, and computer suitable to run it (discussed below under "resources").

The course will consist of lecture, videos, discussion, whiteboarding, Q&A, and self exploration. Most weeks there will be homework that requires taking what was learned in class and apply it to the learner's model. The more time put in, the more benefit can be gained.

This course is perfect to be followed with the 10 week :neural network" course that I offer. In that we will use the same software to build networks of neurons that can be trained to do complex tasks.
Learning Goals
Understand computer simulations of a brain, especially the low level neurons and synapses.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I have been working in the AI space since the last 1990s and watched the technology grow and mature. I have built several different projects utilizing this technology throughout that time. Now, at retirement from the high tech space, my desire tis to bring a true understanding to the next generation of how we got where we are.
