During this 4 week class, we will be learning many different science topics. Each week will be a student centered activity. Students will learn some background about a topic and then students will be given either a challenge or an activity to complete. The beginning of class will be spent testing and showing off the student's work. Then we will watch either a short video or have a short lesson about the important science topic for the week. Students will be build and demonstrate their knowledge of buoyancy. Students will use Newton's Laws of Motion to create their project. Students will be able to describe and make crystals. Students will be able to demonstrate the difference between potential and kinetic energy.
Students will begin their projects in class each week but students will need to complete the projects at home. The amount of time it takes will depend a lot on the student and the complexity of their projects. Students will spend between 1 hour and 3 hours outside of class to complete their designs.
Week 1 aluminum foil popsicle sticks paper plate markers/ paint (optional) pennies Week 2 Students need building materials but they do not need everything on the list. The starred items are possible materials that they can build with. The items with no star are needed for class. *uncooked spaghetti *cotton balls *plastic straws *paper *cardboard *tape scissors *leaves *popsicle sticks rubber bands feathers *aluminum foil ruler pennies (this is to test last week's project) large bowl with water to test last week's project Week 3 (This will get messy) raw egg (to test last week's experiment) pipe cleaners 2- 3 mason jars salt fork fabric fall flowers Week 4 large craft sticks bottle tops glue (hot glue or super glue) lots of rubber bands Candy corn / candy pumpkins / marshmallows
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Students will receive an informal assessment at the end of the course. Students will also receive a Certificate of Completion at the end of the course.
55 minutes per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
Students will need boiling water during week 3 of this class. Parent assistance might be needed to use the stove.
