Description

Class Experience

I have been working in education for nearly 20 years, primarily as a high school English teacher and speech and debate coach. I am certified and experienced in both AP English Literature and Composition and AP Language and Composition. I have also taught at the middle school and primary school levels, and I have taught traditional ELA and ESL course in both the United States and China, as well as teaching online. I specialize in literary analysis and writing instruction, but I am also known for my fun and engaging projects and have an extensive background in Project Based Learning.
Students will read two young adult novellas, a little over 100 pages each (estimated reading time, 3 hours per book).
Students will complete a artistic, steampunk themed, Christmas project. There all multiple project options available and time spent will vary per student. A list of project suggestions will be provided at the beginning of the course. Examples include snow globes, wreaths, movie posters, Santa reimagined, the steampunk gift box, and more.
Students will be required to obtain their own copies of the two novellas in paper, digital, or audio form. Students will need basic art and craft supplies (markers, paper, glue, etc) and may require additional items based on the project of their choice. A full list of project suggestions will be provided at the beginning of the course. Since student projects will vary, a full list of materials cannot be provided. Parents are encouraged to consult the project list with their students so that they may agree on the project together.
1 hour 30 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 2 - 4 hours per week outside of class.
This is a Christmas themed course for young teens. My assumption is, that it this age, they no longer believe in some of the traditional Christmas myths and fairy tales; however, I don't have children, so I am not sure at what age kids stop "believing." It is not my intent to spoil any of these beliefs, but be aware that other students might.

Parents should read the book descriptions provided in the course description to ensure that they approve of the content. These fractured tales are more PG to PG-13, and may not be appropriate for all learners.

About Me

"I am not the teacher that you are looking for," as I wave my hand ever so slightly.

I will not fill your students with rainbows and sunshine. I am not super high tech in the computer age. I don't offer fluff and I have no gimmicks. No puppies,...
