STEAM Tales: How to Catch a Monster!
What's included
1 live meeting
55 mins in-class hoursClass Experience
In this class, students will participate in a fun, interactive read aloud of the book "How to Catch a Monster" by Adam Wallace & Andy Elkerton. Students will complete a reading response "one-pager" by completing a fun drawing activity in which they "Roll a Monster" to share with classmates. Next, learners will interact through a game-based comprehension quiz using Kahoot. After the game, students will watch a Colossal Mysteries episode entitled, "Does the Loch Ness Monster Exist?" By combining a fictional picture book with nonfiction information, students learn to recognize the characteristics of each genre. It also provides entry-level practice for using multiple sources and appreciating various perspectives. Finally, at the end of class, students will utilize STEAM skills to create and paint an original monster. Students will be using Zoom and Kahoot for this class. Please bring a second device to class such as a cell phone, tablet, laptop, etc. on which to play the Kahoot game. It's important that you download the Kahoot app to your cell phone or tablet prior to start of class so that your learner is ready to begin the game along with classmates. Optional home extension includes an art project for a Coffee Filter Monster (super cute)!
Learning Goals
Students will learn to respond to reading through writing, art, and dialogue with classmates. Students will also learn to utilize creative and critical thinking to create and construct original ideas and works of art. STEAM concepts will be woven throughout this lesson and also provided through the optional home extension project.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello there! My name is Teacher Rachel. I love teaching! I have been an reading teacher for 15 years. I have a Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education. I also have two Master's Degrees: (1) Reading and Writing Specialist, and (2) Masters of Science in Library Science. I currently hold two TESOL certifications (Foundational and Advanced) for English language teaching. I have been an online ESL teacher for the past year. As you can see, I have a lot of experience teaching children to read, write, and speak.
As a teacher and librarian, I have worked with elementary students of all ages. My strengths include patience, kindness, and an enthusiasm for learning. My class is a colorful place to learn. You can expect lots of smiles, laughter, and excitement in my classes. I also love to use technology both as a teaching tool and a way for learners to show their thinking! Best of all, you will leave my class feeling valued, because in my class everyone matters!
Ready for a few fun facts about me? I'm not a quiet librarian. I believe reading should excite and motivate learning. I love interactive read alouds, makerspace projects, fostering a growth mindset, and encouraging creative thinking through the use of technology tools/apps. A few of my favorite things include baking, gardening, cats, and (of course) reading! I can't wait to meet you. Hope to see you soon... Hugs, Teacher Rachel
