STEAM Queens: Women in the Arts

Class

Average rating:5.0Number of reviews:(11)
In this 12 week course, we explore the "A" in STEAM. How did the arts get into the realm of STEM? Here we will explore the mechanical, technical, scientific, and mathematical arts, and the women who have mastered and innovated them.

Class experience

Students will learn about twelve unique artistic professions related to STEM (now STEAM) and about women innovators in each of these disciplines.
We may utilize pre-screened YouTube videos in individual classes. These videos will be made available via shared screen.

I worked as a Math Intervention Specialist for four years in a public charter school in California. I have taught math, science, art, and run a computer lab. The STEAM Queens project (then called "Women of STEM") was begun in preparation for International Women's Day, 2017. I am currently working on several STEAM-related projects as part of my Washington State Teacher re-certification.
Method of note taking, if desired.
Curiosity and enthusiasm are strongly encouraged.

Additional information such as links and supplemental activities will be posted on the classroom message board.
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
Brief discussions of sexism and womens' struggles to be taken seriously in the arts. This class is inclusive of all genders, however, and is not geared to girls only.
I may be showing short clips of videos from You-Tube via shared screen in class. YouTube requires users to be 13 years of age before having their own account. I will be carefully screening each video to make sure there is nothing inappropriate such as language, violence, sexual content or nudity in any clip I share with students.

Profile
I am a polymath, a person who has many interests and loves all kinds of learning, over many subjects. I am also an auto-didact: I love to learn on my own. so very likely, I'm a lot like you.
I have taught many subjects, but some of my favorites...
