S.T.E.A.M. Project: Roller Coaster Ridge
In this one-time class, students will learn about potential and kinetic energy in order to build their own roller coaster!
What's included
1 live meeting
1 in-class hoursClass Experience
During this hands-on, S.T.E.A.M. project, students will learn about potential energy and kinetic energy in order to create a roller coaster with one hill, a loop, and a curve with everyday materials (see material's list). We will facilitate this project via Zoom using slides, video clips, and discussion. The structure of the class is as follows: Greetings (Introductions and rules of the class) Brief Roller Coaster Background Knowledge/Science Vocabulary Design Process (Students brainstorm and then begin to create while sharing ideas with each other!) Share (Students will share what they have created and answer guided questions) This project-based class is student centered--students are not told how to create their roller coaster and are instead free to explore the design process of testing and re-testing in order to make a roller coaster that they're proud of within the given time and material constraints. Learners do not need any previous experience to engage in this project!
Learning Goals
Students will be able to use their knowledge of potential and kinetic energy in order to build (and help their peers to build) a roller coaster consisting of a hill, a loop, and a curve.
