Class experience
US Grade 5 - 8
This class will teach your child the engineering design process and will encourage, not control the designs for individual students. The teacher gives a challenge, gives some open-ended suggestions and asks lots of encouraging questions without "giving the answer". This method encourages outside of the box thinking and allows students to be creative and try and fail without feeling a sense of failure. Failure is a part of learning and will be taught as a way to learn and improve designs....
Students will learn how to use the Engineering Design Process in order to solve problems by designing prototypes and testing them. Students will be encouraged to "go back to the drawing board" to redesign and improve their designs. The following National Science and Math Standards will be used: Engineering Design: MS-ETS1-1 Engineering Design MS-ETS1-2 Engineering Design MS-ETS1-3 Engineering Design MS-ETS1-4 Engineering Design
I have bachelor's and master's degrees in education with a specific concentration and certification in middle school sciences. I am also a co-author of eight books on STEAM Design Challenges.
Homework Offered
The homework is to keep working on their prototypes to present in the class the next day.2 - 4 hours per week outside of class
Assessments Offered
Each student will show and discuss their designs and prototypes with suggestions from other students and the teacher for improvements. The teacher will not give answers, instead, ask questions of the designer in order for them to reach the answer that is best for their unique design.Grades Offered
Materials may be used or not used depending on the designer and the lists are suggestions as students may think of something not on the list and for this camp, they can think outside of the box! Land Yachts: balls or toy wheels (to use for wheels), dowels or wooden skewers, cardboard (thick or thin), masking tape, transparent tape, glue, scissors, waxed paper, aluminum foil, tissue paper or cloth (for sails), coins or washers, tape measure, timer, paint, paint brushes or paint markers, box fan or wind.
Parents will be asked to supervise for safety and insist on eye and ear protection when necessary.
I teach S.T.E.A.M. classes (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) to students in elementary and middle school. I can also teach pedagogy for parents as teachers so that they can learn more engaging ways to connect with their kids. I...
