Students will discuss and make observations while making a Kaleidocycle. This class will be taught using Google Slides, video clips, discussion, and hands-on learning. We will cover basic geometry by looking at and exploring geometric nets and 3-dimensional figures while investigating and analyzing attributes of these figures. (Attributes such as the number of faces, edges, and vertices, as well as the names of each of the faces and 3D shapes.) If time allows, we will end the class with a...
Students will improve their understanding of geometry and the terms that are used to describe geometric shapes and solids, while also making a connection between geometry in art.
I have a Master's Degree in Education and I am certified to teach K-8 grades. I have taught math for 27 of my 28 years of teaching, specifically fourth and fifth-grade mathematics. I am a lifelong learner and find myself taking workshops and courses regularly. Sometimes, students see themselves as either a math person or an art person. I hope to show them that math and art go hand in hand. Both disciplines require skills in spatial reasoning as well as recognizing patterns. Each of these disciplines can be scary and challenging, but they also can be fun and fulfilling especially when combined!
2 files available upon enrollmentA one-page template will need to be printed on regular printer paper and card stock, before or at the beginning of class, for learners to color and cut out. Other supplies are as follows: 4 different colored highlighters or markers with broad tips, scissors, ruler or straight-edge, and clear tape. We will also play a game of Kahoot at the end of class if time allows. A second device will make this game much easier for the learners. (For example, 1 computer and a tablet, 1 Chromebook and cell phone, or a desktop and a Chromebook.) It is possible to play this online game with one computer or laptop, but it is a little tricky and requires a split-screen.
1 hour per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
