STEAM Boat Making: Building Boats Out of Paper

Paper doesn't float! Does it? Let's work together to brainstorm shapes, material properties and building techniques that do float, to see if we can find a way to make a paper water craft that might actually stay afloat.

Class Experience

There are some materials that sound good for boat making because they float, but in this class, we will work together to see if we can make boats that float out of regular old paper. We will do lots of group discussion and brainstorming and tests to see if we can think of ways to make our pieces of paper last a bit longer in the water. Please bring your imagination, some pieces of paper, pencils, a ruler, straw, and a tub of water. Your water tub could be a plastic shoe box, sink, bathtub, pool, anything goes. I am excited to problem solve with you, let's get creative!

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello Learners! My name is Devon and I love to problem solve and think outside the box, especially while building STEAM projects and making art. I like to incorporate recycled and reused everyday materials with minimal supply lists to make classes more accessible, and we often manage to incorporate math and science skills as we work. Resilience is such an important life skill! I strive to help kids build confidence through experimenting, failing, and revising to try again. My favorite teacher is Ms. Frizzle and her quote, “Let’s take chances, make mistakes and get messy!” I have a current Colorado state teaching license in Visual Arts and 6 years of teaching experience, ranging from teaching K-12 art in a brick and mortar school to coaching sports teams, to teaching English online, to teaching my own kids. Outside of Outschool, I really love hiking, painting, spending time with my own two sons and husband, gardening, making art, mountain sports, and cooking. Let’s get creative!
