Stats Chat, the NCAA March Madness Basketball Edition

In this 5 week course we will look at the basketball teams competing in the NCAA March Madness tournament, determine which statistics influence the success of each team and use the statistics to create our brackets for the 2023 tournament.

Description

Class Experience

Calling all basketball fans! This five-week course will focus on everything about March Madness. We will explore statistics in prior tournaments and determine which ones had the strongest correlation to winning. Each student is encouraged to fill out a bracket and submit it. We will meet once a week during the tournament to discuss how teams are doing and review the statistics in real time. We will conclude the class at the end of the tournament comparing how accurate our predictions were and...

The students will:
- learn about bivariate data and strengths of relationships
- learn about the bracket structure of the NCAA Men's basketball tournament
- learn how to use statistics/mathematics to make predictions
- have the opportunity to share thoughts and opinions regarding college basketball

I am a licensed math teacher and former basketball coach with thirteen years of classroom experience teaching Pre-Algebra, Algebra, and Geometry. I have worked as a Math Specialist/Interventionist. My student have experienced exceptional progress as measured by local, state and national metrics.

The students will be encouraged to explore statistics and create a bracket for the Men's 2023 NCAA Basketball Tournament.

NCAA Tournament bracket printed (supplied).

Formatively assessed during class participation.

45 minutes per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.

Students will be looking at team statistics using ESPN.com and Realgm.com. They will be calculating correlation coefficients using socscistatistics.com.
