๐ง ๐๐ก๐ฒ ๐๐๐ค๐ ๐๐ก๐ข๐ฌ ๐๐ฅ๐๐ฌ๐ฌ? Students need instruction on sentence construction through the upper secondary grades! As they move through middle school and high school, their speech becomes more sophisticated as should their writing. Learners have trouble transferring the grammar knowledge they have learned in isolation, so they often struggle with sentence syntax, punctuation, and other mechanics as they go into high school. By manipulating sentence parts and learning about function and style, students learn how to put grammar to work. Using professional authors as our models, we study the form, function, and aesthetics of sentences. This helps students write, but it also helps them analyze literature. For example, if an author uses four dependent clauses at the end of a sentence, why? What is the author saying by structuring the sentence that way? Upbeat and fun, each live class is short. Pop in and out as you like! This class will run year-round, summer classes depending on enrollment. ๐ดโโ๏ธ ๐๐๐๐๐, ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐, ๐๐๐๐๐๐! In each class, we work on sentences and how they are constructed. Depending on what sentences we're working on, we may use participial phrases or an adjective clauses. We cycle through the content (listed below), returning to reteach, review, and practice different techniques for making sentences beautiful. We are intentional about transferring the skills learned in this class to other classes, which is quite difficult for students to do. We do this by writing and revising paragraphs, combining and de-combining sentences, elaborating, learning to be creative with language, and other techniques. Based on the class composition, the teacher determines how to move the group forward and develop their skills. For example, as we work on sentences and students have trouble with absolute phrases, we'll spend more time writing those. Students can join at any point in the year! The weekly schedule is learner-led and determined by the learners' skills and content mastery. Students can transfer from section to section without skipping a beat! We cycle through the following skills: ๐บ How to use phrases for impact, variety, sophistication, and elaboration: -Participle phrases -Appositive phrases -Absolute phrases -Gerund phrases -Infinitive phrases -Adjective phrases -Adverb phrases -Prepositional phrases ๐ผ How to use clauses for impact, variety, sophistication, and elaboration: -Independent clauses -Dependent clauses -Adjective clauses -Adverb clauses ๐ ๐๐ก๐ ๐ฌ๐๐ก๐๐๐ฎ๐ฅ๐: August 1-31: Prepositional phrases September 1-30: Participial phrases October 1-31: Appositive phrases November 1-30: Infinitive phrases December 1-31: Gerund phrases January 1-31: Adjective phrases February 1-28: Adverb phrases March 1-31: Absolute phrases April 1-30: Adjective Clauses May 1-31: Adverb Clauses June 1-30: A variety of phrases July 1-31: A variety of clauses *content loops ๐ ๐๐๐ ๐๐๐ข๐ค๐ฃ๐จ-๐ผ๐๐ ๐๐๐ฎ ๐ ๐๐๐๐ซ๐ง ๐ฆ๐จ๐ซ๐ ๐๐๐จ๐ฎ๐ญ ๐๐๐ฆ๐จ๐ง๐ฌ-๐๐ข๐, ๐จ๐ฎ๐ซ ๐ฉ๐ก๐ข๐ฅ๐จ๐ฌ๐จ๐ฉ๐ก๐ฒ, ๐๐ง๐ ๐จ๐ฎ๐ซ ๐ญ๐๐๐๐ก๐๐ซ๐ฌ!
