Learners will engineer a starship that could sustain an intergenerational trip to another star system. By learning about starship design we will also implicitly learn about our own "Starship Earth" and the interconnected nature of systems. We focus on emergent design where students co-construct meaning with instructors in a collaborative environment. Our philosophy is to engage every problem through a 7-generations lens where we consider the long-term implications of the decisions we make today. Our "D20 Learner Principles" are applied consistently throughout the course, although not every principle will be applied depending on the journey of the class itself. These are a few principles that commonly occur: - offer students real choices in their learning - 7-gen sustainability lens - creative mode ASAP - make a welcoming space for diverse learners - be friendly, and incentivize befriending "monsters" instead of vanquishing - use a restorative justice approach to problem solving, informed by consensus Session 1 - "Animal Shelter" Students begin in creative mode to imagine and build systems that support themselves and a special animal - water, food, air and shelter. Session 2 - "Disaster Bunker" Students enter survival mode and their initial build is tested by a random disaster - can they survive an alien invasion or radiation burst? Session 3 - "Redstone Renewables Re-engineering" Imagining themselves the ship's engineer, how will redstone be used to build a renewable power system? Incorporating backup systems becomes important if suddenly all the lights go out. Session 4 - "Trade Fair" Connect with other starships to exchange sustainable products or creative services. Banner design, noteblock jingles and Fairtrade principles are explored. Session 5 - "Highlights" Build a "Captain's Log" series of storyboards, or simple journal, to reflect upon the week's journey. Celebrate on an interstellar dance floor with some music, dance and storytelling.
Learning Goals
- initiate the project with empathy, where students take care of a Minecraft animal to start
- design redstone circuitry to demonstrate powering the vehicle with renewable energy
- create food, water and air systems to sustain life
- design interiors using color theory
- design governance, justice and education systems to build collaborative decision making
- create artistic venues to experience storytelling, music, and dance

Parental Guidance
If students and parents request a course certificate, we will be using Google Forms to implement the self-assessment process. No Google Account will be required and no student information will be stored in doing this.
Padlet will be used to map Earth locations and provide instructional sequence.
Minecraft will be the medium through which we build, re-engineer and connect with our community. Screenshots of student work will be taken by instructors and seen on the Padlet so our community can be inspired by each other’s builds.

Teacher expertise and credentials
At Infinite Mind Pictures we engage world citizens by creating thrilling movies, lighthearted games and deep StoryWorlds. Our goal is to help imagine a sustainable future by making students more aware of our planet through Minecraft.
Infinite Mind Pictures helps learners build sustainable StoryWorlds in Minecraft. As the founder, Stefan Rasporich is a teacher and has done research with the University of Calgary "Imagining A Sustainable Future" in Minecraft - (find this project's publication at: https://www.springer.com/gp/book/9783030294885 )
“I have worked with Stefan for a number of years. He is a passionate teacher, creative designer and enthusiastic learner who explores new ways of teaching and learning to draw best out of his students. With Stefan, learning becomes a joy and the discovery of self, others, and our worlds. I have also learned so much about how students could drive their curriculum by visiting his classes and co-authoring a book chapter.”
