This one-week class will help students learn common patriotic music and the stories behind them in preparation for celebrating July 4th, the United States Independence Day. The learner will improve confidence in performance skills of tone, timing and articulation while learning to play music associated with the American national identity. The instructor will provide the music via PDF downloads. Instruction will be through demonstration and imitation. The instructor will demonstrate the songs, usually by phrases, and then teach the students through a varied process of counting and clapping rhythms, identifying notes and valve fingerings (slide positions for trombones), and playing the phrases to build toward the entire melody being learned. Students will also learn about the origins of the music, the importance of the pieces to American patriotism, and recommended watching and reading listed on youtube.com and wikipedia.com.
Learning Goals
The student will...
• develop skills in tone, timing, and articulation while learning tunes;
• learn the stories behind the songs;
• learn to play songs in differing key signatures, time signatures, tempos, and styles.
Tunes include but are not limited to:
• My Country Tis of Thee
• America, the Beautiful

Teacher expertise and credentials
I am a musician and educator from Lubbock, Texas. I have been teaching school music, private lessons for over three decades. Music has allowed me to travel to 40 states and 3 foreign countries. I have performed in diverse settings, including the YMCA in Tel Aviv, during an earthquake aftershock near San Francisco, the Mesa Amphitheater in Arizona, the Hutchinson Convention Center in Dallas, the Long Beach Arena in California, Circus Circus Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada, and a pre-school in Key West, Florida.
My greatest joy as a teacher is seeing students achieve great things that previously seemed out-of-reach. Those accomplishments are built upon solid fundamentals systematically introduced in classes and one-on-one lessons. To date, all of my private students who have auditioned for Texas All-Region Bands have placed. I invite you to enroll your young musician in one of the small-group classes or private lessons offered through Outschool.com.
