Stargirl by Jerry Spinelli Read Aloud
Class experience
Stargirl is a story from the point of view of Leo, a boy who learns from Stargirl to question conforming to the crowd, and what is true kindness and selflessness. From commonsensemedia.org: "11th-grader Leo has never met anyone like Stargirl, and neither has anyone else at Mica High. She dances around the cafeteria playing a ukulele, and never misses a chance to sing "Happy Birthday." She doesn't act right, she dresses weird, and she is always blazingly herself. We will discuss individuality, desire for attention, acceptance, and making an impact. As we evaluate why the characters do the things they do, we will also determine what we would do in the same situation, and how we could make it better. We will add new vocabulary in context, and keep a running list of words we learn.
I have read this book with a class of middle schoolers before, and it made a space for us to talk about kindness, respect, differences, acceptance, and how we want to be treated ourselves. Excellent lessons from an entertaining story and enriching characters.

There is a bit of romance and a kiss as Leo falls in love with Stargirl. There is some meanness in the kids who don't accept Stargirl's individuality or differentness, but this leads to an excellent discussion of acceptance of people's differences, and how every person wishes to be treated kindly.
