US Grade 3 - 6
Kayla Stierwalt facilitates this book discussion. The class starts with general discussion about the book's characters, events, and themes before diving into deeper topics. These include kindness, friendship, uniqueness, confidence and more. Using examples from the book, students examine the importance of friendship and self-esteem and how it relates to approval. Students consider how they might react in a similar situation and how they can be good friends. The discussion also ponders who and what guide these characters.
Learning Goals
The students will learn how to engage with a book's text. Specifically, they will learn empathy through discussing the character Stargirl and her experiences of being negatively perceived as different and how her kindness impacted those around her.
