Class Experience

Star Wars: Watch Party Extravaganza! is a class made specifically for Star Wars superfans. Each time we meet we will watch in its entirety one Star Wars film, or a series of TV show episodes (an arc in Clone Wars, for example). While we watch we will discuss and analyze our favorite scenes and characters, and learn about the filmmaking craft that enabled the creation of the Star Wars universe.

PLEASE NOTE:
1) All students will need to have their own individual Disney+ accounts, so that everyone can watch on a screen separate and off-screen from their Outschool camera. This is necessary to comply with copyright law.
2) The class is listed as 2 hours and 15 minutes long, but some Star Wars films are a bit longer than this. I will make note of the estimated run time of each film or series of episodes (posted in the schedule below) so that all families are aware of when the class will run over time.

CLASS STRUCTURE:
This class has a very unique structure compared to other courses on Outschool, so please read this next section closely.

1. At the start of each class and before the watch party begins, I will briefly go over our rules and guidelines (see below). This should take only a few minutes.
2. Then, we will do a short countdown so that we can synchronize when we all hit play on the film or episode from the appropriate screen on Disney+. Once the film or episode is playing, there will be no pauses.
3. While watching, the volume of the film or TV show episode should not be audible on Outschool. Use a low volume or simply mute the screen. I recommend using close captioning.
4. While we watch, we'll be providing our thoughts on everything that's happening on screen! As always, students are expected to be respectful to one another, and all everyone to have a chance to contribute to the conversation. Students should raise their hands, and generally limit the length of their comments so other students may have the opportunity to respond. Using the chat features present within Zoom will be encouraged.
5. Students are expected to be present for the duration of the class, but may take a bathroom break or go get a snack whenever needed. They should let the teacher know before doing so, however.
6. When the film or series of episodes ends, we will quickly wrap-up with final thoughts (just a few minutes) before concluding the class.

STUDENT ENGAGEMENT:
As suggested above, despite being a watch-party class it will nonetheless be highly-interactive and discussion-based, and student engagement and conversation (orally and by utilizing the chat box on Zoom) will be encouraged. We will discuss one or more of the following themes and concepts each class: story and character development, character motivations, script writing, film/TV marketing, and more. Most importantly of all, I will make sure every student gets the chance to voice their opinions!

THIS IS AN ONGOING CLASS!
Students are not required to join each and every week, nor it is necessary to have attended in previous weeks. Every class stands alone (we watch a different movie or series of TV show episodes each week), and therefore it is not necessary or required to attend every session the course is offered. In short, students can come and go as they please (making use of Outschool's new 'pause' function is a great option). If there are any questions about this please don't hesitate to reach out. Finally, spoilers are also likely for any students who have not seen or experienced certain Star Wars content!

COURSE SCHEDULE:

- Friday, January 26: Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker (run time: 2 hours, 23 minutes)
- Friday, February 9: Solo: A Star Wars Story; final class!

Note: As an ongoing class, new films (for example, the Sequel Trilogy) and TV shows (Clone Wars, Rebels, the Mandalorian, and more) will be added in subsequent weeks. Please check back often for updates!

Learning Goals

With the breadth and depth of the Star Wars universe as our canvas, while we watch the films and shows students get the opportunity to hone their critical thinking skills, as well as practice having respectful conversations with their peers. We will also discuss extensively topics specific to filmmaking, including: characterization, plot, special effects, dialogue, tone, cinematography, sound, marketing, script writing and more.

I am what you might call a Star Wars fanatic, and have seen all of the films and the majority of the TV shows too many times to count. My friends and I have spent many long nights discussing and debating every topic related to Star Wars.

As a teacher, I have extensive experience in managing classroom discussions of all ages and ability levels. As we watch these shows and movies together, my goal is to ensure that every student has a chance to make contributions, provide their opinion, and/or demonstrate what they've learned.
