Class Experience

What would the Star Wars Universe be without Princess Leia?

In this discussion-based class, we will piece together Leia’s life story through our knowledge of the movies, shows, books, and comics in the Star Wars world. We will ask critical questions along the way like “What would’ve happened if Leia hadn’t given the Death Star plans to R2-D2?”

Through this journey, we will see the impact that her actions and choices had in a galaxy far, far away, and be inspired to make our own good choices in life because of the positive impact we might have.

There will also be time to share our own Star Wars favorites, and play a few Star Wars trivia games. Feel free to bring your favorite Star Wars item, if you have one, or wear something related to Star Wars.

You will have a lot of fun in this class if you have watched at least the original Star Wars Trilogy (Episodes 4-6) and even more fun if you've seen all the movies (Episodes 1-9). You may even want to re-watch some of the movies before the class to refresh your memory! Feel free to bring in any knowledge that you have about Leia through the "extended universe" shows and books as well. If you haven't seen Star Wars before, you are still welcome to join!

Learning Goals

Students will exercise their recall skills and use their critical thinking skills to collaboratively pull information from 9 movies to create a life story of one character (Princess Leia). They will reflect on the trajectory of Leia's life - the situations she was thrown into, the choices she made, the actions she took, and how her life impacted the world around her. Students will connect Leia's story to their own lives, to help them realize that their choices and actions affect others and the world.

I have been obsessed with Star Wars since I was quite young, starting with the original trilogy, through the first Timothy Zahn sequel books in the early 1990's, the reboots, the Prequel films, the Sequel films, and the "Extended Universe" of books, animation, and live action shows. There is so much to love, explore, and find inspiration in through Star Wars.
