From the original Star Wars: A New Hope to The Mandalorian, we will dive into the history of Star Wars music and analyze some of the greatest Star Wars melodies! Students will participate in creative listening activities, using audio clips to discover how the composer John Williams matches music to characters and scenes. I will empower students with basic music vocabulary to describe what they are hearing (fast/slow tempo, rising/falling pitch, instrumentation), as well as teach students...
Students will learn a brief overview of 40 years of Star Wars music history. Students will learn basic musical vocabulary and methods to spot recurring themes/motifs in music. Most importantly, students will improve their deep listening skills and learn to pick out subtle details in the music of Star Wars that complement the visuals in the movies/TV shows.
I have two degrees in music (B.A. Music Education, M.M. Music Composition) and have taught Elementary General Music (K-5) in the Michigan Public Schools for 5 years. In addition, I have done extensive scholarly research into music theory/history and have presented on this topic at several graduate music conferences (U of Toronto, U of Kansas City-Lawrence, etc).
No supplies or resources needed, except for your ears!
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
The class is built around small listening activities where students are formatively assessed on their listening skills.
1 hour per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
This class is based on my own research into Star Wars music from online articles ("A Field Guide to the Musical Leitmotifs of Star Wars" by Alex Ross), scholarly research (Professor Frank Lehman) and podcast episodes ("Star Wars Oxygen”). I have broken down these complex sources for young students to understand.
