Class is divided into three parts: How to come up with a joke How to write a joke and How to tell a joke In the first session we’ll discuss how to come up with material and go over joke structure. Learners will have a couple of days to come up with jokes that we’ll go over in the second session where we dive into writing different types of joes. We’ll learn about performing in front of crowds and by the end perform a 3-minute set for the class. Time will be spent interacting with the group, writing, performing, and watching each other's performances. Topics covered will include: different types of jokes, the structure of a joke, public speaking, pronunciation, brainstorming, word economy, timing, and stage fright.
Learning Goals
By the end of the class, learners should be able to:
-Turn a funny idea into a well-worded joke with a set-up and punchline.
-Perform a prepared extemporaneous humorous speech (comedy set)Other Details
Parental Guidance
Only clean comedy clips and examples will be used. Cursing will not be tolerated, any learner using profanity will be muted.
I encourage you to enroll at least 24 hours before the class starts, or the section may not be available.
Supply List
A handout will be emailed prior to class. It’s recommended to have paper and a writing utensil.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
