St. Patrick's Day STEM: Leprechaun Sand

In this hands-on class, observe chemical reactions in a simple science experiment, then engage in a themed sensory activity. STEM / STEAM concepts will be discussed, all while having fun!

Description

Class Experience

This one-time class will open with a St. Patrick's Day show and tell, so learners can get to know each other.  Then, we will use baking soda and a small amount of vinegar to observe a chemical reaction.  We will discuss the characteristics of a chemical reaction, make predictions, and record observations. Next, we will use the products of our chemical reaction for some fun sensory play as we create "leprechaun sand"!

To conclude, we will discuss the following:
-The materials and supplies...

Students will conduct and discuss a chemical reaction.

1 16oz. box of baking soda, green food dye, 1/2 cup of white vinegar, eye dropper/medicine dropper/pipette

Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.

25 minutes per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.

Our youngest learners may need assistance with the vinegar during the experiment
