Description

Class Experience

In this class we will learn...

* four types of ciphers for encoding secret messages: Caesar Cipher Wheel, Pigpen Cipher, Keyword Cipher, and Polybius Square. Students will receive a printable for each of these ciphers so they can maximize their practice (and fun!) with each.

* a variety of spy-related vocabulary such as: burned, brush pass, double agent, cryptography, shadowing, and more!

* spy techniques for disguises, props, pocket litter, cover stories, and more!
As a teacher of gifted learners, sensitive topics are often raised by my students- they are very big thinkers. I am very capable of navigating sensitive topics in a manner that respects (a) a student's desire for knowledge and addresses the student's interest while also (b) restricting information to a developmentally appropriate, emotionally-digestible response.
There will be homework, and it will be fun! As we learn about spy disguises, props, cover stories, and more, students will be encouraged to try to develop their own spy persona on their own time. We will begin each class with everyone donning their best spy disguise, showcasing their best spy props, etc. While this homework is not "required", it will certainly enhance your student's experience in spy school by allowing him or her to take part in discussions, so I would strongly encourage participation.

a spy field journal (notebook) scissors something to write with five pages of handouts (I will supply a PDF for you to print)
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
There is no formal assessment for this course. As a teacher of gifted and high ability students, I find that grading typically increases student anxiety. I am, however, happy to give you some observations of your student's overall performance in the course.
50 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
We will discuss the concept that spying is a dangerous and life-threatening profession and that spies might be killed if they are caught. However, we will not view any graphic images, and I will not be teaching about any specific spy scenarios resulting in death. My curriculum does not include discussion of the torture/abuse of spies, however, a student may raise this topic during discussion. If so, we will explore this concept in broad terms only, and avoid discussing specific methods.
