This class is a "hands-on" approach to playing piano or keyboard instantly, using a color-coded system to learn to read music, play by ear, and harmonize. Instruction is focused on the one student's abilities and learning needs, matching level to methods, one individual at a time. Everyone learns in their own unique way, and the teacher tries to be guided by that. Basic music fundamentals are taught while also offering several easy songs to play right away. We will be using teacher*-created curriculum and materials that are all original or in the public domain, or that fall under Fair Use provisions pertaining to copyright regulations in education. Teacher sends the pdf-type files through the classroom post for parent to copy and print for student. (multi-color content). A sturdy-backed, one-inch, three-ring binder would be great for the student to have to keep the music pages organized. A dry-erase music-lined whiteboard and multi-colored markers are also recommended. With piano/keyboard lessons, the placement of the computer device in relation to the instrument is important and can be tricky sometimes with Zoom audio and video. Teacher needs to have a good view of the student and also the hands-on-keyboard, and student needs to have a set-up that allows for ideal keyboard-to-bench height ratio to play comfortably and correctly. Student will be encouraged to enjoy the music-making, and the explore the adventures awaiting in the world of melodies and harmony. And a repertoire of six good songs will be the result of a little study and practice. Continuation of lessons on an ongoing basis will also be available, as well as a weekly class (not private) for learning new songs and skills.
Aloha! I'm "Teacher Leilani" in the classroom, just for fun, but my name is Leigh Johansen; that's the short form. It's actually Jane Leigh Johansen-Oishi, but what was I thinking there? I have been around many blocks, having just retired in 2019...
