Class Experience

Through this lesson students will create paintings using modelling clay. We will start with a 5x5 card and add a background. Then we will learn some simple techniques to create beautiful flowers. From the simplest image using a single pedal for a tulip to using several pedals to create a deep and rich sunflower I promise these images will be beautiful. The possibilities for creativity is endless. My hope is that you take the technique learned in class and use it to create your own images at home in your own time. Though clay is not a permanent medium it photographs beautifully and can make the most striking cards. This medium is even used in storybook illustrations and movies.

The class will be taught in easy to follow steps to start. It will have the freedom to allow children to explore how they would create their own flowers. It will be an open ended project so students of all abilities can find some success.

Though we will be learning an artistic skill it is a great place to practice speaking English, learn the ins and outs of social conversation and get to know others while completing a fun project. Social interaction is as much a focus as is the art lesson.

I have 20+ years of experience working with learners of all abilities and ages. I believe my teaching practice is positive and encouraging. I believe I have the experience to make all students feel welcome. I also allow each group and learner help me direct how a lesson will go. I often adjust my plans mid lesson due to learning needs, group dynamics and even the interest of the participants in the midst of a lesson. I believe this is the beauty of working in smaller groups.

There is no experience needed to join my class. However, some younger children find spreading the clay on the background to be a little challenging with smaller fingers. Warming up the clay a lot in their hands as well as being patient is key here. This is also a great way to build those important muscles!

I teach fun and exciting art projects using modelling clay as it is versatile, easy to use and the results are vibrant! Even animators and illustrators use this medium to illustrate beautiful stories.

I completed my education degree in 2002. I spent 9 years teaching children in kindergarten to grade 4. In my time working in public schools I found art an amazing teaching tool.

In 2009 I had the amazing opportunity to teach in Thailand where I ran an art program at an international American school. A school where I worked with children from all around the world.

From 2011- 2019 I had the privilege of working with young adults with special needs I helped them to transition from high school to life as adult. From coaching them through what courses to take in a desired college program, offering their time as dedicated volunteers in their areas of interest or working and building employable skills every day was different and each client had unique gifts and skills to offer the world. In this job I felt they taught me everyday about how to be a better human being. Though this is may not be "art" related I feel it illustrates the type of teacher I am and the joy I have in working with a wide variety of people.

In 2019 I had my beautiful daughter and these days she is my main focus. But Outschool has opened a new door for me to get back into the classroom. It has also allowed me to recreate my the art program I grew to love while teaching in Thailand.

I love the idea of working in smaller settings which is a value for Outschool. It allows me to get to know your child better. I have worked with children new to the English language through out my teaching career which I feel is a great skill for a number of Outschool learners.

I love building meaningful relationships with my students and helping them discover who they are. I will be intentional about looking into the eyes of your child and show them they matter. I think art is a beautiful medium to do this with.

A few personal things about me, I live in Canada close to the amazing Rocky Mountains. I have a silly dog named Lillybelle, a daughter who is 2 and of course my wonderful husband!
