Description

Class Experience

Students will learn how to develop a story idea, characters, setting, and plot. They will write compelling dialogue and page-turning scenes. In terms of English grammar, they will fix any of their common mistakes and improve their overall fluency, including sentence structure, punctuation, spelling, verbs, and vocabulary. This will help everyone from native speakers to ESL learners.
I taught English as a Second Language for ten years before I became a novelist. I've been teaching novel-writing for the last ten years and some of my students have been ESL learners, so I have a lot of experience with making it fun and interactive.
I've also learned other languages, so I understand how hard it can be. I've lived in Korea and Mexico, and I've studied both Korean and Spanish, though the class will be entirely in English. In the class, the students do a lot of writing, but not much talking. As they improve their writing, this will help them build their confidence when speaking in regular life.
They don't need to write anything outside of class, but they can!

They should type their stories on a google document or a word document they upload to the Outschool so that I can look at their writing. I use Canva only to share slides so that they can understand everything they need to do. I give a lot of positive feedback to encourage them to keep writing.
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
There are no grades; however, I will help them with their writing and give them feedback about what they can work on, but I will especially talk about what they are doing really well.
4 hours 35 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 2 - 4 hours per week outside of class.
I will be using a Canva presentation to help the students understand the grammar and see everything visually. I would love the students to write their stories on a google doc so that I can read them and correct any of their individual grammar issues.
I will give examples from stories and books for this age group.
