In this one week course over spring break students will learn the rules of the game, learn about check and checkmate, and be able to play a full game against each other and myself. The perfect introductory course to chess in one week!

Mastery Evaluation
1 hour per week. Optional homework will be provided after each class for students to practise the topics learned in the class. Students are highly encouraged to complete the homework to maximise their learning and improvement
Grading
No grades will be provided. Feedback is available anytime

Class Experience

This course is for complete beginners and covers the basic rules of the game. Students will be introduced to each piece and how it moves and get a chance to practise puzzles and exercises to master each piece. Towards the end of the course students will learn about the goal of the game - checkmate - and get to practise simple checkmate puzzles.

Each class is 45 minutes and consists of a summary of the previous lesson's topic, an introduction to the new topic, practise puzzles where every student will have multiple opportunities to test their new skills, and time for questions and discussion. The classes are highly interactive and students are always encouraged to ask questions.

Lesson 1:
Introduction and the Pawn
 Introduction to chess, learn how to move the pawn. Practise this by playing the pawn game

Lesson 2:
Rooks, Bishops and Queens
 Learn how to move the Rook, Bishop and Queen. Practise puzzles using these pieces.

Lesson 3:
Knights and the King
 Learn how to move the Knight and King. Practise puzzles using these pieces

Lesson 4:
Check and Checkmate
 Learn about check and checkmate. Understand the importance of checkmate. Practise basic checkmate puzzles

We will use lichess to play games during the class. A free account will be required to facilitate classroom activities. More details will be provided before the class starts

I have also taught many spring break camp format classes as well and enjoy seeing students having fun and making friends while learning chess.
