50 mins in-class hours per weekClass Experience
In this ongoing class, I'll introduce students to techniques I've used to create atmosphere and suspense in my eerie, award-winning fiction. Each session will start with a discussion of the topic of the week, then we'll move onto a class brainstorming session and a short writing exercise that will involve a spine-chilling setting or situation. Students who wish to read their work aloud for light feedback will have an opportunity to do so, time permitting. They can also send their work to me for light feedback within the week. Week 1: Writing Opening Lines That Hook Readers Week 2: Creating Atmosphere through Sensory Language Week 3: Making Memorable Monsters Week 4: Inventing Spooky Surprises and Twists I welcome writers of all levels. All I ask is that you come with a willingness to work and expand your imagination.
Learning Goals
Students will learn the components of compelling storytelling. They will gain an understanding of how to create suspenseful scenes and settings that produce a reaction in their readers.
Other Details
Parental Guidance
While this is a class geared toward spookier writing topics, I'll encourage students to avoid sharing scenes of graphic horror to be mindful of other students.
Supply List
Please bring a pencil or pen and paper for notes and the writing exercises. If you'd prefer to work on a laptop, tablet, etc., that's perfectly fine, as long as you're able to access the class via video at the same time.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
