Class Experience

US Grade 8 - 10
In this class we will focus on writing scary stories and what makes a great thriller. We will start by covering elements of fiction and writing and define what makes something scary or spooky. Our in-class readings will begin with some of Edgar Allan Poe's most famous short stories. While we read the stories we will discover nuisances, tricks, and figurative language that make these stories incredibly spooky and memorable.

Students will learn to incorporate these literary devices into their own writing and create their own scary story. We will have a scary story contest where the students will vote for a winning story!

Students will learn through a series of lectures, class readings and discussions. Students will work in pairs or groups, depending on class size, peer edit, and participate in activities to check for understanding.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hi! My name is Kathy and I live in Southern California. I love working with students all around the World and of all different ages. I mainly teach classes that are Language Arts based (reading, writing, spelling, and grammar). I also teach about Historical figures, especially if I can tie them into Literature. I also love teaching about animals, and doing story time for the younger kids.

I have been teaching for over 15 years. I have taught in traditional school settings, charter schools, home schooled my own children, and taught online. I have a BA in English as well as a K-12 Teaching Credential. I am very passionate about helping people learn to love reading and writing. I also love to help people that need a little extra help with spelling and grammar. It makes me so proud and happy to have a student tell me how much they think they are improving or to get answers correct on something they missed before.

My approach to teaching is interactive and hands on. I want my students to learn while having fun. I ask a lot of comprehension questions, group work, pair work, and projects (depending on the class). I try to do as much of the work in class as possible so that kids can still be kids once they are done.

My background is in English but I love History and Science too (especially the experiments). It wouldn't be unusual in one of my classes to have to make something that just pops into my mind because it seems fun. I love animals, chocolate, and all things Disney!
