In this course students will be learning how to generate ideas & draw various designs for a spooky fairy house, how to work with air dry clay to create miniature accessories and a 3D fairy house structure with interesting textures and details, how to paint their fairy house and accessories to give them a finished look, and how to seal the final product for durability and troubleshooting for air dry clay breakage. Though students are given the option of following along with the instructor's design, but the intent of this class is for each student to create a unique fairy house structure of their own design. Sessions 1 & 2: Building the house structure and adding sculptural details and textures. Sessions 2 & 3: Painting and sealing the house & group project share.
Learning Goals
Through this process students will learn about the process of art making, and elements of art with a focus on form, texture, shape and color. Process art begins with generating multiple ideas, choosing a specific idea to create from, and then tweaking or modifying that idea as it is being applied within the medium. Students will learn basic hand-building skills when working with clay such as how to prepare a surface for clay building, how to mold clay into various shapes and structures, how to attach clay pieces using the score and slip method, how to create textures using a variety of tools, and how to clean up after working with clay. They will learn how to paint their clay creations including; how to properly protect the work area and themselves from paint splatter, what kind of paint to use, how to apply paint to their structure, and how to properly clean paint brushes and tools.

Supply List
Week 1: Tub of white Crayola Air Dry Clay (minimum 2.5lbs or 1.13kg of clay), surface covering (wax paper or parchment paper), smock, small cup of water, bucket/bowl of water, old towel, glass jelly or salsa jar or a canning jar (16oz or 1 Pint), rolling pin or 1in x 1in round wooden dowel cut to 12 inches long, gallon sized resealable plastic bag, 1 sheet of paper, tape, plastic clay sculpting tools ($5-$6 on Amazon) OR items from around the house; toothpicks, wooden skewer, plastic fork & knife, straws, old comb, old toothbrush, coins, pebbles or stones, etc. Week 2: Surface covering, smock, cup of water, paintbrushes (1 paintbrush will suffice but having a flat brush, round brush, and small detail brush will help with paint application and details), acrylic paint in colors of your choosing plus black and white, paper towel, tacky glue, hair dryer Optional: Battery operated tea light, water-based Polyurethane Varnish found at the hardware store OR Liquitex Gloss Medium & Varnish found at art or craft stores for sealing your final project, Spanish moss, sand, beads, or other items to add texture and details.

I have worked as a private tutor for 25+ years with elementary, high school, and college level students in the following courses; Grade Level Math, Pre-Algebra, Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II, Statistics, Reading, Literature, Writing, Biology, Anatomy and Physiology, American & World History, and Spanish I.
My full time job is running my business, The Painted Toad Art Studio. I am a teaching artist and I provide youth and adult painting events in my studio and online.
I enjoy a variety of activities including; painting, drawing, cooking, bike riding, swimming, scrapbooking, singing, photography, and spending time with friends & family. My husband, four daughters, and I live in Michigan. We have 5 cats, two bunnies, & 12 chickens.
