Students will learn how to apply Pythagorean's Theorem to create the Wheel of Thedorus, which appears in nature around us!
I will do a brief review of Pythagorean's Theorem (students should already have been exposed to this in their regular math setting). We will then discuss the first few steps of the wheel. Students will then be given the remaining time to work on completing their wheel. I will be there to assist and monitor as needed. They will then decide how they would like to design their wheel.
Students will be able to interact with each other to bounce ideas and make new friends while they work.
Students should have already been exposed to Pythagorean's Theorem, although being proficient in the skill is not necessary. This will give students another opportunity to practice applying the Theorem.
Students who have not completed their drawing are welcome to work on it outside of class time at their discretion. I will plan an additional 30 minute {free} session at the end of each month as a show and tell for all learners to share their drawings and meet others who have also taken the class.
Note: I am not an art expert, I am a math expert. I do not have the expertise to critique the art section. I am creating a bridge for the beauty of art for those with more creative minds to see how math appears in nature.Other Details

PHILOSOPHY
Hi all you eager learners out there! I'm Kristen Bennett and my outlook to learning is to make mistakes, explore different strategies, ask "why," and above all - have FUN!
BACKGROUND
I hold a California Teaching Certification in Mathematics Education (grades 6-12), and a Masters Degree in Mathematics Education K-8. I have extensive experience teaching in US public schools, and have taught for the last four years at top-level international schools in Tokyo, Japan.
In 2020, I decided to change my primary role as a teacher in the classroom, to being a full-time mom to take care of my two daughters. After making an international move from Tokyo back to the United States with my family, I realized half of my heart belongs to being a teacher and supporting the growth of eager learners like you. Outschool happened to be a great platform to enable me to do that.
STYLE
My classes focus on making mathematics relevant to you. I am a non-traditional teacher. I use research-based methods that encourage discourse, problem solving, engagement and critical thinking. The activities chosen are well thought out to ensure they are current, applicable in the real world, and incorporate multiple mathematical skills, instead of "just one".
