Teens need to practice communicating out loud and thinking on their feet! Many of them have fears or anxieties that they want to overcome, but don't have the experiences to build confidence & become comfortable enough with their abilities to take risks. This four-day summer camp is designed to challenge learners in a fun way using a Spin the Wheel with new topics daily. We will bring some FUN to learning & practicing public speaking skills. The students will learn: +How to set-up their environment for online presentations +Appropriate audience etiquette for online presentations +Socialization skills & guidance for respectful interactions +How to take turns & use the chat appropriately for this type of class +How to volunteer &/or accept random selections for speaker order +Tips to calm themselves before & during a presentation +The steps for planning with an Introduction, Body, & Conclusion structure for their presentation +Preparing their thoughts & to speak in short or limited time frame +To incorporate creative & descriptive language with the purpose to entertain & inform +How to present with confidence verbally +How to present nonverbally with online friendly gestures +How to accept time limits & redirection +How to reflect & complete self-evaluations +Steps to be an active listener +How to give positive peer-to-peer feedback using "I" statements +How to use word stems to phrase positive observations &/or things they might try during feedback +To receive feedback gracefully & for growth +How to take "quick word" notes from the feedback they want to remember +How to set improvement goals based on feedback
Certified Speech Communications Educator with 20+ years of experience teaching impromptu speaking and selecting age-appropriate topics.
+Can prepare ahead using the Planning Worksheet & the next day's Spin the Wheel (by request for link) +Many learners find pre-planning & practicing helps them feel more comfortable & less anxious
+WORKSHEETS: A Introduction, Body, Conclusion Planning Worksheet, Peer Feedback, & Notes will be shared before class starts. +PRINT or COPY DOC: These can be printed (one set per day) or copied in Google Docs for the student to type their work on.
We will learn how to give positive feedback and provide it peer-to-peer after each presentation. The educator will also provide an informal feedback via chat/out-loud with the learners during the live class. If needed, more detailed feedback will be provided via private message by the end of each day.
8 hours per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
