US Grade 4 - 6
In this ongoing club, students will work on strengthening their topic sentence writing skills by spinning The Wheel of Topics and having a group-based discussion on the topic. Based on the direction the group takes the discussion, students will practice writing a topic sentence to best describe or introduce the subject. Each session will be broken into about three 7 minute parts where the students will first spin the wheel and discuss the topic that comes up, followed by writing the topic sentence. The first 7-minute session will consist of the spinning of the wheel, the discussion, then the teacher guiding the creation of a topic sentence by reviewing what the discussion covered and how to incorporate it all into a well-written, comprehensive topic sentence. The second 7-minute session will consist of spinning the wheel again for a new topic to discuss, then the students guiding the creation of a topic sentence using the provided guide. The third 7-minute session will consist of the final spinning of the wheel and discussion, followed by the students independently writing a topic sentence. Extra time will be for students to share and compare their independently written topic sentences if they would like. Since each session will be independent and based on spinning the wheel and practicing 3 times, there are no set themes. Each day, students will write 3 topic sentences. Therefore, students can enroll and unenroll at any time, practicing as much or as little as needed. This class only covers topic sentences, not how to write a sentence, paragraph, or essay.
Learning Goals
Students will improve their ability to create comprehensive, well-written topic sentences. This will prepare them for future essay writing.
