Spelling is sometimes the step-child of writing. "We aren't concerned about spelling. We are looking for content." Yes content is important. But in order for content to come across appropriately to the reader, the writer should be able to spell content correctly. Spelling is often taught by having students write the words over and over with the idea in mind that the more you spell it, the better you will become at spelling the words. This is but one technique among many that can improve spelling. In my ongoing class, students will learn rules, tips, and tricks to become better spellers. Writing words backwards, using colored pencils, drawing word pictures, using letter tiles are just some of the ways to help students become better spellers. We will learn a rule for each session, apply the rule, learn tips for spelling, and then finally practice spelling words. I look forward to meeting your child in my spelling class. Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello everyone. I am Teacher Mary G. and I am so happy to be teaching with Outschool. I am the mother of four and grandmother of three. As a middle school teacher, I have taught all subjects, but language arts is my specialty.
Classes will include grammar lessons (punctuation, capitalization, parts of speech) and sentence and paragraph writing. Novel reading and discussion would also be an offering to students. As an elementary/middle school teacher, I taught math and science. I would love to
instruct students in these subjects as well. In addition to academic lessons, I will be teaching value lessons (i.e. honesty, cooperation, kindness), and life skill lessons (i.e. stress and anger management, problem-solving, and confidence building).
My education includes a bachelor of science in education, an elementary endorsement, and a master of science in education, (school counseling Prek-12th grades). For 14 years, I taught fifth and sixth grades. The last four years before retiring, I served as the fifth and sixth grades' school counselor.
Every student is unique. Every student can succeed. Every student can learn given the time and the necessary tools. Fostering a positive environment of encouragement and expression of thought, allows students to learn from their mistakes and grow in their achievements.
As a teacher, I cherished the time with my students and I often told them at the end of the school year, "I'm going to miss you." And I did. But I think they missed me too because so many of my "kids" came back to visit and tell me how "hard" school was and they wanted to return to my class. That feeling was fleeting. Each student adjusted to their new grade, new classmates, new teacher(s). They grew up, but they never stopped coming back (facebook, email, texts, etc.). And I still miss them.
