Class Experience

OBJECTIVES
A successful student completing this course will improve their ability to spell (orally and written) the English language.

METHOD
We will approach this course hands-on through direct practice, and each week I will have prepared for students a new list of words to practice with during class. This method can be compared to that of a spelling bee in which I am the moderator. I will ask the student to spell selected words and they can then ether spell them or ask for a definition. Any errors in spelling will be noted. Note that unlike a traditional spelling bee this will not be treated as a competition. Instead, student mistakes will simply be noted and they will be asked to continue to participate as time allows. Repeated mistakes of a similar type will be taken of special note by myself so that the student can take further practice of such a type of such spelling rules (e.g. i before e except after c) that are influencing this behavior.

Although we will be offered the chance to practice spelling orally during class, it will be imperative that the student practice the written form of communication outside of class. In order to allow practical practice of this (so that the answers aren't already spelt out for the student), they will be asked to spell 10 words in written format (either with pen and paper or with a computer). Then 10 words must each begin with a different letter of the English alphabet to offer the student some diversity to their challenge and while they will be told that I will accept any word that they offer, more of a challenge offered to themselves is something that I will certainly note in their evaluation. In other words: a student who constantly spells monosyllabic words (e.g. cat, dog) is something that I will take note of just as one who aims to spell multisyllabic words (even if spelled incorrectly.

HOMEWORK
No take-homework will be required for this class.

EVALUATION
Student evaluation will be contingent on participation in the spelling bee activity, showing a willingness to learn and demonstration of improvement in spelling.

Profile
Teacher expertise and credentials
From my first class as an education major at the University of Maine I've known that I've had a passion for learning and helping others to grow and acquire knowledge as well. My years of experience as a teacher with public schools offers a unique perspective which I'm anxious to share; that every student needs a unique approach to how they should be taught so that they can achieve excellence. We should never settle for standard with our kids.
