Class Experience

US Grade 2 - 5
In this ongoing private tutoring lab, students will get grow in their spelling ability. Students will be able to bring their own challenges for customized tutoring. In addition, I will offer short lessons and fun exercises to learn spelling rules and exceptions.

This is because all lessons, exercises, and homework are made to be bite-sized, short and sweet. This creates a low-stress feeling of accomplishment in students who may be otherwise intimidated by spelling.

I will provide a practice sheet of homework for students to do between meetings. Once a month I will give a short, low-pressure test for students whose families want testing. I will award a certificate of achievement to students who get 100% on their tests, and I will offer make-up tests for those who desire them. Students can retest any number of times until they achieve 100%.

The class works best for kids who have some experience with spelling but are not yet confident in their abilities. It is not best suited for learners who are working with dyslexia or dysgraphia. If you have thoughts or questions about this please don't hesitate to message me to discuss.

I look forward to working with your student on spelling confidence and competence!

Teacher expertise and credentials
I believe every learner deserves a high quality, content-rich education, and I know kids learn best when they are having fun. I create classes with these goals in mind.

Private Tutoring: I teach students who are learning to read and I support students who are struggling with reading and writing. I teach the logic of spelling using explicit phonetic instruction in the Montessori method.

How I Teach:
Classes with me are content-rich, visually engaging with high-interest illustrated slides, conversational, and warm, with games and trivia and active participation actively encouraged. With young learners I sing a lot and share rhymes to make learning fun and memorization easy.

Why I Teach:
As an American Studies major at UC Berkeley, I researched Classical Education theory and practice in the US and I minored in Classical Studies, the history and cultures of Ancient Greece- and Rome. As a former working class kid, I believe that every child should have access to a high-quality liberal arts education. I offer learning opportunities that exceed state standards and spark a deep love of learning. I love my work helping families access a top quality education out of the private schools and into the home.

Other Experience:
I am a K-1 classroom teacher and an online teacher of littles through teens. I work with English learners and native English speakers.

When I'm not teaching, I work as a health- and life coach with a passion for supporting moms, teens, and children. In my capacity as a coach I’ve led groups and taught classes and workshops on thriving in homeschool, positive mindset, social skills and relationship-building, goal-setting and time-management, health and wellness, ecology, resilience, and joy for over 10 years.

As it has for everyone, the Covid era has made even more clear to me just how important positive connection is for kids and teens. I'm grateful to Outschool for being an avenue for making friends and developing positive relationships in the lives of our young people.

In my off time you are likely to find me working on my tiny urban permaculture garden, practicing Latin, volunteering, camping, and hiking. I love exploring Northern California nature and culture with my family, including our sparky chihuahua/terrier, Earth. She is the first dog I've ever had and she fills a dog-shaped hole I didn't know was there in my heart.

Education:
UC Berkeley American Studies and Classical Studies; College of Marin Early Childhood Education; Montessori and Reggio Emilia professional trainings; Institute for Integrative Nutrition Certified Health Coach; Urban Permaculture Institute Permaculture Design Certification; SWEET Stop Food Waste Educator. International Open Academy 120hr TESOL certification (Teaching English to Learners of Other Languages).
