Assessment
The parent will receive a written report detailing: - the spelling patterns the learner knows well; - the spelling patterns the learner needs to practice - suggestions for further study/instructionClass Experience
Is your learner struggling with spelling? I can help! To improve on spelling, it is helpful to know exactly which spelling patterns are the most troublesome for the learner. By focusing on those specific spelling rules and patterns, the learner can learn to spell with confidence! Here's what to expect during testing: - Before beginning the assessment, we will spend a few moments chatting to help the learner to relax and feel comfortable. My classroom atmosphere is warm, friendly, and inviting! - I will explain the testing procedure to the learner at the beginning of the class. I will emphasize that this is not a "pass or fail" test; this is merely a tool that will help the parent/tutor/teacher see what the learner needs to practice. - The learner will need 3-8 pieces of paper, at least 2 pencils, and an eraser. (For best visibility, please choose a pencil that writes darkly.) - One by one I will give the learner a word to spell, use the word in a sentence, then state the word again. For example: Mane. The horse had a beautiful, brown mane. Mane. - The learner will write the word, then show me their work by holding the paper up to the camera. (Some learners may need help to ensure that the entire word is visible on the screen.) - Privately, I will make a note of the spelling of each word. (I do not tell the learner whether it is right or wrong. This way, I do not give away any information that helps the learner spell later words in the test. It is important that I see every mistake the learner makes.) - The testing will continue in this manner until I have seen enough examples to assess the learner's spelling level. (This varies from learner to learner.) - If there is time remaining, we may do some fun spelling activities and/or a mini-lesson featuring one of the missed spelling patterns! - IMPORTANT: At the end of class, please send a scan or photo of all pages of the learner's completed spelling test. Upon receipt, I will analyze the student's spelling skills and send a written report to the parent (via the Outschool messaging system) within 48 hours. The cost of the class includes my time analyzing the learner's spelling errors and writing a comprehensive, detailed report. The report may be used in many ways. For example: - To share with the child's teachers, tutors, and/or other specialists - For homeschooling parents to plan instruction - To prepare for taking my Spelling Intensive Camp I hope to meet your learner soon!
