Class Experience

"Double E" (ee) always says /ē/.) But did you know that "double o" (oo) does not always say /o͞o/? In this class, students will learn the different vowel teams, their sounds, and the spelling rules that accompany them.

Rules will be presented through flashcards, oral repetition of consonant team sounds and rules, and spelling words. When applicable, students will be provided with history or word origin. (Ex. The "eu" in "eucalyptus" makes the sound /yoo/, not /o͞o/ because it is Greek in origin.) A handout will be provided in class for the students to use to design an at-home practice program.

This is "Class 3" in a three-part series, but students do not need to take any class as a prerequisite for another class. Parents can pick and choose which class or classes may best address their child's problem areas. If a parent believes their child could benefit from all of the classes, I would suggest taking them in the order they are listed. However, all students should know their consonant letter sounds as well as their short and long vowel sounds.

Since this is a one-time class, students and parents will be provided with information that will allow them to continue practice at home. My goal is to provide an economical program. Parents will be able to take the information presented and use it at home, as many times as necessary, until they feel their child is making progress.

*Spelling will be approached in a similar manner to Orton-Gillingham, All About Reading/All About Spelling, and Spell to Write and Read programs.
